Energy Efficient Pasta

Did you know that there is a energy and water efficient way to cook pasta? I love to use this method especially when cooking a small amount for little ones. Instead of bringing a large pot of water to boil first, in this method you can put your pasta in first thing.

All you have to do is put pasta in a frying pan, cover with an inch or so of water and turn the burner on. A huge amount of energy is wasted using the traditional method of heating the water first.

You’ll want to keep an eye on your pasta to make sure you have enough water, but it doesn’t take much longer to cook than the traditional method.

Here are a couple more energy efficient cooking tips:

  • Only boil as much water as you need in a kettle (but be sure to fill to the minimum line).
  • Keep the oven closed when you’re cooking and use the oven light if needed. Opening the oven causes heat to escape and requires more energy to get back up to temperature.
  • Skip preheating the oven, unless you’re baking pastries and bread. Put food directly in the oven as soon as you turn it on and add a few extra minutes to the cooking time.
